Centennial High School (commonly referred to as CHS or CeHS) is a California Distinguished,[2] public secondary school in the city of Corona, California. It is one of eight high schools in the Corona-Norco Unified School District and is the only high school in the district that provides the International Baccalaureate program of study. The school consistently ranks at the top of its regional athletic league, most prominently its football and wrestling teams.

Mission

It is the mission of Centennial High School to create a dynamic learning environment that meets the needs of all students in preparing them to be successful problem solvers and effective communicators.

Campus

The school was constructed in 1989 and is Internet-connected throughout.

There are plans in the near future to rebuild classrooms, expand the student parking lot, replace the asphalt ground to concrete in the PE area, and build a new two-story complex building, housing a multi-purpose room, kitchen, and classrooms.

Academics

The school's California State Standards test scores are lower than those of other high schools in the district but provides a greater number of National Merit Finalists and Scholars than any other school in the district. IAround 830 students are enrolled in at least one honors level class, which include Advance Placement and International Baccalaureate courses.

Centennial High was a member of the Mountain View League, however in the 2007-2008 school year the Mountain View League combined with another league and is now the Big 8 League.

Football

The Centennial football team has a record of 5 California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) championships (2000, '02, '04, '07 and '08), 9 Mountain View League Championships, and 2 Big 8 League Championship. The 2007 Centennial football team played in the D-1 State Championship, losing to De La Salle High by a score of 37–31. The 2008 Centennial football team was undefeated and beat De La Salle by a score of 21-16 to win its first State Championship.[3] The 2010 Centennial football team went undefeated until the D-1 State Championship, losing to Palo Alto High School by a score of 15-13.

The Centennial football program began in the fall of 1989. Chris Risberg is recognized as the very first varsity football player at the school, by being the first player to earn the coveted Black Shirt. The Black Shirt was earned by exhibiting hard work and determination, as well as athletic ability. Chris set the standards, and hallmarks that turned Centennial into a football powerhouse.

Wrestling

The Centennial wrestling team has 18 Mountain View League championships, 8 Big 8 League championships in a row, 3 CIF Runner-Ups and 7 CIF championships. They were also the 2010 CIF southern section champions.

It is estimated that 27 different languages are spoken at Centennial High School. Just under half of the students in attendance qualify for free or reduced lunch.

The school came into the national spotlight in mid-2005 when Centennial student Dominic Redd was slain by three other teens near the campus after school.[4]
